Cinema Outing

Hello Everyone

The Committee has decided that we need to get the Cinema Outings up and running again. We will go to pre-determined movies at the Showbiz Cinemas at Delacombe Town Centre. We will be going on the last Wednesday of each month. But we will only go if there is something worth seeing. We hope to go to movies that start around 10am to 12 noon and then have a coffee/lunch afterwards in the Wildseed Cafe which is opposite the cinema. We will be able to tell you at the Monthly Meeting what we will be seeing next.

This month we are going to see “Thelma” on Wednesday, 25th September at 12.15pm.

We know it is short notice but it would be great if you came along and had a great time at the cinema.

The Wheels on the Coach go Round and Round..

Last Thursday, 7 members met up at Ballarat Station to catch the PTV coach to Hamilton. On the way we stopped at Smythesdale to pick up 3 more members, so a total of 10. The whole journey took about 2 and half hours. We got off the coach at the now defunct Hamilton Railway Station and walked up to Thomson’s Tavern for lunch.

After a very nice lunch we walked around to the Hamilton Gallery. There was a couple of exhibits which we checked out. Later, we had a walk around the city centre of Hamilton and later had afternoon tea and then a walk back to the Railway Station to catch the coach home.

Everybody liked Hamilton and we all enjoyed not having to drive.

Thanks to Esma and Wally for organising this, as well as our booking for lunch. They also got the information we needed to visit the Gallery. Visit the Club Photos page to see more pics

Day Out in Maryborough

On 8th August our group set off to Maryborough by train. Most boarded in Ballarat and some joined us at Creswick. More chatting than observing the countryside happened, followed by more chat over lunch.

Everyone watched the historic film, and the details of the Maryborough station design and building filled our day perfectly. Return trip was interesting. All enjoyed the day. Thanks to all participants. Wally and Esma

Upcoming Dates for the Card Group

As you may be aware, our booking at the Lucas Community Hub was cancelled. We have decided to try the Alfredton Community Hub located at 18 Donegal Drive, Alfredton. The room we have booked is quite a bit bigger than the room we had at Lucas Community Hub. So, we can accommodate more members to learn Canasta.

The Card Group for remainder of 2024 will meet at these times at Alfredton.

Wednesday 11th September, 1.30-3.30pm
Wednesday 16th October, 1.30-3.30pm
Wednesday 13th November, 1.30-3.30pm
Wednesday 11th December, 1.30-3.30pm

Information regarding dates for 2025 will be published soon.

Great Visit to Hall’s Gap

The Public Transport System is a pleasure to use…

This sounds a bit funny, get the train from Ballarat to Ararat, then a Public Transport bus to Stawell, and then a final bus from Stawell to Hall’s Gap. Then we had lunch and then a very quick look around Hall’s Gap. It was Kings Birthday weekend and there many people around and lots of things to look at. Later that afternoon, we got the public transport system to get home.

Fifteen members of the Club took this adventure, which was even more enjoyable because the weather was so good at Hall’s Gap after leaving the drizzle and fog in Ballarat. Quite a long day out, but we all had a great time.

The bus driver on the coach from Stawell to Halls Gap, Phil, was very witty and gave us a fabulous commentary as we drove along to our final destination.

The fare was $3.60 per person for both trips, and everybody regarded it as a bargain for a great day out. We’ll be trying some other trips of this type in the future and I’m sure everybody will be very enthusiastic about any trips we find.

Card Group Gets Underway

The Card Group got going on 29th May at the Lucas Community Hub. Ken McD is the leader of this group and is doing a great job teaching others how to play differing card games to everybody who turned up. Canasta was the game of the day and playing in groups of four was quite challenging. About 14 members turned up, and they all had a great time.

The Lucas Community Hub was great, and everybody enjoyed the free tea and coffee through the afternoon.

Dine-Out Post Meeting

The next General Meeting of the Club will be on June 11. 2024. The after-meeting luncheon will be held at Don’s Kitchen at the Midland Golf Club located at 330 Heinz Lane, Ballarat Vic 3350. Please include your name on the listing at the Meeting so you can be included in the numbers.

Don’s Kitchen specialises in Malaysia and Chinese food and on our previous visits the meals have been excellent.

Footy Tipping Current Ladder

At the end of round 10 here is a list of the current situation. Please remember that when people are on the same points, they are then separated by their Margins. The lower the Margins the higher you are up the ladder. Please use the ESPN Footy Tipping app to check the latest situation going forward.

Brass Band at our Monthly Meeting

At our May Monthly meeting, we decided to not have a Guest Speaker and instead we had the Brass Section of the Ballarat City Band perform for us. They played for about 45 minutes, and everybody enjoyed the music. It included some old and some new. It was terrific.

Titanic Outing

A group of 11 members ventured to the Melbourne Museum to see “TITANIC – The Artifact Exhibition“. Our Booking was at 10am, so we all boarded the 7.39am train from Wendouree to get there on time. Getting up at 5.30am was fantastic…it was still dark for some hours to come. Anyway, we had a good trip into town and then caught the tram up to the Museum, which is located in the Exhibition Gardens.

There were quite a few people at the Museum, and it seemed to be a very popular place. The artifacts were amazing, and the displays were fantastic. The passageways on the ship were there and the Grand Staircase was also there. It was magnificent.

We had lunch at the Museum and then wandered through the rest of the Museum before heading home. It’s free to enter the Museum and is well worth a look.
